Insider View of Peter Lehmann’s Aud 2000 a magnum – Masterson

Insider view : Aud 2000 a bottle can surely attracts and being attacked at the same time, especially when it is even pricier than the so delicious Torbreck’s Laird, Grange or Hill of Grace.

First to taste this single vineyard Shiraz 2015 super cuvee with just a few in Asia. I held my breath and honestly, I was expecting a lot for the price point. Swirled, slurped, spitted, I exhaled, and, it does delivers ! Let’s not talk about the price first, am surprise what a great Syrah Peter Lehmann can produce! A complete wine really; very assessable , supple, seamless, elegant, great polished tannins with bit of wildness, minty, chocolate melting in mouth, a syrah with so many layers interwoven one over another. A very classy one. (98) Pressing by small batches in their basket press into small stainless steel fermenters for two weeks on skins, regular hand pumpovers, before completing malolactic fermentation in French oak hogsheads. Ages in a single 2500L , oval-shaped, foudre for 36 months then further 12 months in bottles.

Fruit for the 2015 vintage of MASTERSON was harvested from a single vineyard from the Moppa subregion, the Hammerling Vineyard. The vines are relatively young for the Barossa, planted in 1991, on original rootstocks in deep sandy loam soils with ironstone over red clay. The clone was “1654. Minimal intervention and dry grown techniques were used – a practice of relying only on natural annual rainfall for growing grapes.

Glen Hammerling, grower for this new wine

1,458 magnums made (no 750ml format) with only 1,000 bottles available to sell globally and on allocation.

MASTERSON, the name Peter Lehmann gave to the original winery founded in 1979, and it would be released in 2019 to mark the winery’s 40th anniversary. Future releases will not necessarily be from the same grower/vineyard.

Other than this crazily expensive one is waiting to be proven to be successful amongst collectors, I am guessing , perhaps to Peter Lehmann sales don’t exactly matters, but they are just wanting to make a top of the top wines. To me, their Eden Valley Rieslings – Portrait, has always been sensational and continue to be so. Margaret Semillon is one of the few from outside the Hunter Valley to impress and to age ; Stonewell Shiraz is still one of Barossa’s best.
