Wine To Bid At The Cape Winemakers Guild 2017

Another great master class. This time is a tasting of 49 special and ‘super’ cuvees, not regularly available on the market, with award-winning Andrea Mullineux, from the Cape Winmakers Guild, at Berry Bro. & Rudd in HK.

Few of my pick out of the Cape Winemakers Guild which I really like during my tasting are :

🍷Ataraxia under the gravel Chardonnay 2016
single south facing vineyard in Hemel-en_Aarde Ridge , barrel ferment then  aged in small french barrel for extra 10months / 93

🍷The Drift farm Die Kan’s Vate 2013
a 100% Barbera!  A single vineyard made in open top fermenters with punch downs.  A concentrated one with black fruits, mint and cherry with nice soft tannins, hint of toasty oak  / 94

🍷Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer 2014
a bordeaux blend  74% Cab, 17% Merlot 9% Cab Franc.  100% new french oak for 23 months.  Fragranced with black currant, vanilla and tea leaf an elegant one  / 93

🍷Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Windansea Pinot Noir 2016
A follow-up to the outstanding Seadragon Pinot Noir 2015, which is also back in the auction this year with a further 24 cases released, which will no doubt hit record prices.

🍷Beyerskloof CWG Traildust Pinotage 2015
single vineyard, deep with black fruits complex with great texture and finesse long finish, not exactly the stereotypical pinotage most think it is! 95

🍷Leeu Passant Old Vine Cinsault 2015
Sourced from South Africa’s second oldest red-wine vineyard, with 91-year-old bush vines, this 100% Cinsault is a unique and powerful expression. Full of black berries and fine tannins. 93

🍷Mullineux Trifecta Chenin Blanc 2014
and how can we don’t have a Chenin in any South African pick! the oldest vine is 80 years old) and youngest at 24.  slightly oxidative in character, medium body chenin with apple and melon notes. Can be consume now and within these few years. 92
